Spring registration is coming soon! In the next few weeks, we will be releasing information about deadlines and registration, and our academic advisors will have some drop in hours for our online, professional, and main campus students (virtually, at main campus and RTP, and through phone calls) to share with you so you can prepare for next semester. To get ready, if you haven’t done so already, we need you to read your academic advising syllabus and, after reading it, sign the Academic Advising Contract Form confirming that you have read and understand expectations. Please note that your advising hold for spring will not be lifted until you complete and submit this form.

Webinar for Professional MBA’s:  “How to Network Without Feeling Slimy”

The term “Networking” brings up negative feelings for many people: “self-promote-y,” “not true” and “fake” are some terms that people use.  But the fact is, 80% to 90% of jobs at the Professional MBA level are obtained through networking!

Attend this webinar to:
1. Learn how to reframe how you think about networking so that it feels less “sales-y” and more authentic
2. Take away important tips to network comfortably at an in-person event
3. Learn how different your approach should be when networking in-person vs. online

Wednesday, October 7, 2015, 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Delivered via WebEx (attendance capped at 12).
Please RSVP on Joblink (Events>Workshops) by 5:00pm, Monday, October 5, 2015. WebEx log-in information will be sent to you after registering. Because attendance is capped, the CMC no-show policy will be enforced (please cancel within 24 hours if you must).

Meet a Jenkins MBA:  The Weekly Spotlight

Cox, Amanda headshot

Name:  Amanda Cox, First Year Full-Time MBA Student
Employer: Graduate Assistant, Poole College of Management
Hometown:  Kerrville, Texas
Previous: Bachelor of Arts, Journalism-News Writing, Texas State University

Q:  What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had?
A:  In my first year of college, I worked at a survey research center and had to call people and conduct 30-45 minute surveys on a variety of topics. It was really difficult to get anyone to agree to take the survey, and it was really awkward because the surveys took so long to get through. I definitely wouldn’t wish that job on anyone.

Q:  If you could meet a famous person (living or dead) for coffee or a beer, who would you want to meet? What would you want to ask them about?
A:  I’d be super interested to meet with Richard Branson. He has been incredibly successful as an entrepreneur and has managed to build a net worth of about $4.9 billion while still giving back to worthy causes. I’d love to ask him about his biggest failures and how he has overcome them.

Q:  What’s your dream job / career goal? How is the MBA helping you get there?
A:  I’m still unsure of EXACTLY what I want to do, but I’ve always dreamed of working for Nike as a marketer. I think they do an incredible job of making sure that they are ingrained in the consumer’s minds. The MBA is going to give me the hands-on experience necessary to be successful outside of the program.

Q:  If you could have any superpower you wanted, which one would it be?
A:  I’m a huge animal lover, and so I think I would love to be able to communicate with animals. I’m sure my Pomeranian would have some interesting things to tell me.

Q:  What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
A:  I had a journalism professor at Texas State University who used to be the speech writer for Ted Kennedy, and he always told me that the most important thing in life is to be thoughtful.
