Application Deadline Coming Soon: McLauchlan Leadership Series
The McLauchlan Leadership Series is open to all Jenkins MBAs who are not currently taking part in a corporate leadership development program. This premier leadership development program that enables fellows to build their network, receive executive coaching and master the fundamentals of personal, team and organizational leadership. The McLauchlan Leadership Series is a leadership development program designed to support professional, graduate-level leadership education through experiential learning.
McLauchlan Fellows have unique access to corporate executives and community leaders throughout the series. Fellows build their network and experience unique coaching and professional development to further career growth. McLauchlan Fellows receive a certificate upon completion and are recognized at the Poole College of Management spring commencement ceremony.
“What we define as leadership is developing the skills of perspective and decision making and judgement. Our professors do a wonderful job of constructing on functions and skills…Schools teach economics, accounting, supply chain management, and all the other things that are on the curriculum. But how do you take a young professional and take the rough edges and smooth them so that when they walk into your organization, they already know how to have a perspective of what it means to look outside of their function? The NC State Consumer Innovation Consortium is accepting applications for the Spring 2016 Consumer Innovation Practicum. Applications are being accepted through October 31. I am delighted to welcome Nichole Miller to the Jenkins MBA program as the new assistant dean. Nichole has worked the last 15 years at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. For the last seven years, Nichole served as director of Academic Advising and Student Life for the full-time MBA program at Duke. Before that, she was instrumental in repositioning and growing Fuqua’s Health Sector Management program. Nichole received a BA in psychology from the State University of New York and Buffalo and an MS in Higher Education and Educational Administration from the University of Rochester. Her office is in 2120A Nelson. I encourage you to drop by and introduce yourself! – Dean Allen
Academic Advising Syllabus
This is a reminder to all full-time students to view your academic advising syllabus and, after reading it, to sign the Academic Advising Contract Form confirming that you have read and understand expectations. Please note that your advising hold for spring will not be lifted until you complete and submit this form. You will not be able to register for Spring classes when your window comes up until you complete this assignment. Students who wait until the day of registration to complete the form will not have their hold released immediately so please plan in advance.

Full-time students seeking advising help should first attend the group advising session for your year:

- 10/14 – 4:20 pm – 5:20 pm, MBA Lounge (1st Year MBA Students) (NOTE: NEW DATE & TIME)
Please note: First-year full-time MBA students who have plans to attend the Business Etiquette Dinner at 5:30 p.m. may leave a few minutes early so they can attend that event.
Group advising sessions are an essential first step in helping you prepare for Spring ’16 courses. All students with advising questions or needing guidance on courses are expected to attend these sessions, unless there is an outside conflict with a fellowship/GA obligation. After attending a group advising session, students who need more individual advising assistance can schedule further advising meetings or attend drop-in sessions.

RSVP by Friday! Poole College Etiquette Dinner
Business dining manners matter. Dining in a fine restaurant can be intimidating if you don’t know the etiquette involved. Learn all the finer points of dining in the 5th Annual Poole College of Management Etiquette Dinner, featuring certified etiquette trainer Sharon Hill. The event will take place at the NCSU McKimmon Conference and Training Center from 5:30 to 8 pm. You will receive etiquette training, a four-course meal, and the opportunity to network with employers. Participating employers include: PNC Bank, Fidelity, Cisco, Vanguard, Travelers, NetApp, Enterprise, E&J Gallo Winery, Norfolk Southern, and more.

Career Management Video Series
International Student Video-On-Demand Series: The Jenkins CMC has partnered with Beyond B-School to give international students access to career experts who lecture at business schools throughout the world. They present leading-edge job search techniques to international students in order to meet the special challenges they face. Through this partnership, you will have access to the presentations addressing a comprehensive range of topics, each consisting of one-hour lectures and panel discussions available online, on demand,24/7 on any device.
Video-on-demand webinars are added at 8 a.m. on Thursdays, starting Sept. 24. Each video will be available on-demand through August 2016. Watch presenetations on employer perspectives of hiring international students, legal issues regarding immigration, writing effective emails, networking American style, and interview strategies.

Women for Success Triangle Wine & Cheese Event
You’re personally invited to Women for Success Triangle’s annual Wine & Cheese event. Mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 22. (The event is not just open to women!) Innovative Women’s Conference – November 13
Tickets are on sale now for the annual Innovative Women’s Conference, bringing together women from around the Triangle area – from graduate students to entrepreneurs to corporate executives – encouraging discussion and hands-on learning in the areas of business innovation, science, technology and entrepreneurship. You will leave this conference inspired and better prepared to effectively lead people and organizations in a technology-rich, global marketplace.
The conference will be held at the Talley Student Union on November 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a networking social the evening before at HQ Raleigh, November 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Students can purchase tickets for only $15 (includes both events). Non-student early bird tickets are on sale for $40 until October 31, 2015. Tell your friends and family to purchase early for great savings!

The Ellevate Network (formerly 86 Broads) is a dynamic professional women’s networking group, and they’re launching a Triangle Chapter! The N.C. Triangle Chapter Launch Luncheon will be held October 23rd at Prestonwood Country Club, and will feature Sallie Krawcheck, Ellevate Chair, former CEO of Merrill Lynch and Smith Barney, who was featured on the Forbes World’s 10 Most Powerful Women list. The Jenkins MBA Marketing Club will host a digital marketing lunch with ROI Revolution on October 15 from 12 to 1 p.m. This event will be held in the SCRC Conference Room. MBA Finance Club Fantasy Stock Portfolio Competition
Attention future and seasoned investors! The MBA Finance Club is hosting a fantasy stock portfolio competition to test your investment acumen. Individuals or teams with 2-3 members are encouraged to apply. The competition is active from October 12th to November 13th. A prize will be awarded to the top individual or team at the end of the competition.

Supply Chain Club Industry Panel
The Supply Chain Club will be hosting an industry panel on Thursday October 22nd from 4:30 – 5:45 p.m. in Nelson Hall room 2210. The panel will consist of supply chain professionals in various companies in the triangle area. They will be speaking about their roles within their companies to give students a better understanding of supply chain roles across various industries. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. There will be time at the end for networking with the representatives.

Meet a Jenkins MBA: The Weekly Spotlight
NAME: Hugh Fisher
TITLE: 2nd-year Jenkins MBA, Graduate Assistant, Business Sustainability Collaborative Associate
HOMETOWN: Kannapolis, N.C.
PREVIOUS: M.A., English, NC State University ’07; B.A., English, UNC Wilmington ’01
Q: What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had?
A: I worked one summer as a campus security patrolman at UNC Wilmington. I was basically a tall goody two-shoes in a polyester uniform, writing parking tickets and checking the ID’s of anyone who came back to the dorms with alcohol in their bags. I’m convinced that every parking ticket I’ve gotten since has been karma from those days.
Q: Tell us something about you that we might be surprised to find out.
A: I’m way out of practice, but when I was in college, I taught myself acoustic guitar, and I’ve actually written several songs. Never have tried to capitalize on that, but one of these days …
Q: If you had 5 minutes to teach someone something new, what would you teach?
A: The basics of proper résumé formatting. You’d be surprised how many people don’t grasp how important it is to present yourself well in those crucial seconds that a hiring manager looks at your résumé.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
A: My father told me when I was a teen, “Do whatever you want in life, but always do your best.” When it came time for me to go to college, he said he didn’t care what I did for a living, as long I gave it my best effort.
Q: What’s your dream job / career goal? How is the MBA helping you get there?
A: My career goal is to become a content marketing manager, developing winning strategies to help my firm’s brands and message reach our customers. From there, I’d love to work my way up to CMO. I also have a dream of one day finishing and publishing a novel, in which case the MBA will help me market it. The Jenkins MBA has helped me dial in my career interests and refine the abilities and experience I already had into marketable career knowledge. Coming here was the best decision I’ve made yet.
