Verge NC will allow for 75 minutes of open networking and encourage everyone to play through the course. Prizes will be given for the man and woman with the lowest score, plus we’ll give away a prize for a hole-in-one at our hole.

We want to identify 3 MBA students to join 3 E-Clinic students (undergrads) to form a team to design and build the hole. We’ll hold our first team meeting on Monday, Oct 19 at 1 p.m. – students will need to be prepared to build the hold at the Oct 28 event (6-8). Meet a Jenkins MBA:  The Weekly Spotlight

Lu Athnos

NAME:  Lu Athnos, Jenkins Professional Online MBA
TITLE & EMPLOYER:  Engineering Manager / Regional Technical Advisor, ABB Inc.
HOMETOWN:   Originally Beijing, China; now based in Raleigh
PREVIOUS:   Master’s degree in Paper Science, NC State; dual bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and English, Taiyuan University of Technology, Shanxi, China

Q: Tell us something that people would be surprised to learn about you.
A: Well, I’m Chinese, but I sound like a “local girl”. A lot of people ask me, “Did you grow up around here?” Of course, I have to say “no” but that I do travel all over the country for work. I am travelling at least 40 weeks out of the year, and that has given me many experiences and a great deal of confidence in myself. Some of my interests and hobbies include riding my motorcycle, fly-fishing, kayaking, shooting a bow instinctively, shooting guns of all kinds, hiking, camping, photography, etc. I even use some Southern slang, like “y’all!”

Q: If you had five minutes to teach a stranger something new, what would you want to teach?
A: I want people to be interested in technology. People call me the “gadget girl” because I keep up with technology and like helping other people solve any problems with their new equipment. Talking to you right now, I’ve got two computers and three monitors running in front of me. So, I’d show people how to use this technology. For example, I’d pull out my new iPhone 6S Plus and show them useful applications. Evernote, for instance – I used that at the online MBA residency to take notes with. I also have the Apple Watch. And, at the residency, I had my “Selfie Stick” with me for taking pictures of the group or to get more height to a picture. My group used that in our presentation on how to motivate Millennials!

Q: If you could meet any famous person, living or dead, for coffee or a beer, who would you meet and what would you want to ask about?
A: Wow, I’ve got so many people going through my mind right now. I’m a born-again Christian, and someday I’m going to go to Heaven and meet Jesus the Christ. I know it’s just a matter of time, but I can’t wait to meet him. I would humbly ask him why he gave people “free will” since it has allowed such trouble in the world. I have my own understanding of course, but I’d really like to hear his wise counsel.

Q: Tell us about the Online MBA Raleigh Residency – what did you find interesting, enlightening, and surprising about that experience?
A: It was awesome to connect with my fellow MBA classmates and make friends. It’s very encouraging to see that there are so many people who are doing what I’m doing. And it feels good going back to school after so many years. We had some really good speakers there, and it was great to meet our professors and learn about opportunities, including the new McLauchlan Leadership Program. I was very impressed.

Q: What are your long-term career goals, and how is the Jenkins MBA going to help you achieve them?
A: I’m planning on staying with my company, ABB Automation. In the short term, I want to do a better job of managing my team – to develop their talents and figure out how to better coach and mentor them, along with the rest of the engineers in my company. Long-term, I’m thinking about the “big picture.” I want to know how I can help my company with its strategic planning, while also answering the question, “How can we plan for a sustainable future?” The Jenkins MBA is helping me to acquire this knowledge, especially the financial aspects of doing business and helping us understand those challenges.
