Experts to Discuss Looming Retirement Crisis in the U.S., Explore Potential Solutions

Members of the area’s university communities and the general public are invited to attend a panel discussion on the looming retirement crisis in the U.S., scheduled for Monday, November 6, 2017, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a luncheon until 1:30 p.m. at the Talley Student Union, 2610 Cates Avenue on the NC State campus in Raleigh, N.C. Paid parking is available in the Reynolds Coliseum Parking Deck, 2411 Dunn Avenue, Raleigh, 27601.

There is no charge to attend this event, co-hosted by TIAA and the NC State Poole College of Management, but reservations are required to allow planning for the luncheon. Please register by November 1 at go.ncsu.edu/retirement-income-panel.

Panelists are Robert Clark, Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Professor of Economics and Melinda Morrill, associate professor of economics, both in the Poole College of Management, and Derek Dorn, managing director for TIAA Regulatory Engagement and Public Policy. Their discussion will be moderated by Ron Pressman, chief executive officer of TIAA Institutional Financial Services. The panelists will take questions from the audience following their discussion.

“Ensuring American retirees have sufficient income to last through their retirement is among the most critical issues facing our economy over the next 15 years, especially as the wave of baby boomer retirements accelerates,” Clark said. Pensions and retirement planning have been a focus of his research for the past several decades. Morrill’s research has included studies on the timing of retirement decisions, supplemental retirement saving plans, and the importance of planning for retirement.

“The prospect of saving enough money to last through a potentially long retirement can be overwhelming, even for those who feel financially secure in their pre-retirement life,” Pressman said. “Ensuring all Americans have access to better retirement plans—notably, plans that can produce a stream of income that is guaranteed to last a lifetime – will go a long way in helping to bring the peace of mind we all deserve in retirement.”

Also presenting brief remarks at the event are Randy Woodson, Chancellor, North Carolina State University, and Annette L. Ranft, Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Chair and dean, NC State Poole College of Management. Richard Burr, U.S. senator from North Carolina, is also expected to attend.
