Tom Byrnes, a senior lecturer in marketing in NC State’s Poole College of Management, is the inaugural recipient of the Poole Student Advisory Board Outstanding Faculty Award.

The award is given to a Poole College faculty member who goes above and beyond for their students, is highly communicative in and outside the classroom, and has a demonstrated record of teaching excellence.

“Tom engages with Poole students in many different ways and brings in resources for his students in class,” says Ilona Gromatzky, a senior in business administration who chaired the task force that implemented the award. “He is also very involved in AMA [American Marketing Association] and always keeps us updated on what’s going on in Poole.”

Byrnes retired from IBM in 2010, after a 35-year career in sales and marketing. He joined Poole College to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in marketing, sales and brand management.

In addition to Poole, Byrnes has taught at Wake Tech Community College, Barton College and Keystone College.

“Tom is involved in every way he can be, from advising students on career goals to helping run the student AMA chapter,” Gromatzky says. “He wants to see marketing grow at Poole College and is a great resource for students.”
