It’s time for the MBA Finance Club’s current leaders to step down and a new team of visionaries to take the club to the next level! Students accomplished a significant amount of work during the last year, co-sponsoring a symposium with the International Society of Tropical Foresters and hosting a fantasy stock portfolio competition. New leadership has plenty of opportunities to reach new heights. Nominations are open for three club positions:  President and two Vice President positions.

Please send your nominations to Rafe Estevez at rcesteve@ncsu.edu by Wednesday November 25th. Be sure to include both the name(s) of the person(s) you’re nominating and the position you’re nominating them for.  Voting will be open during the following week.

Plants vs. MBAs!  – Finance Club Service Event

Where: Fallon Park, 2406 Oxford Drive Raleigh, NC 27608
(Please park along the road.)

Come save the world from invasive plants and get a workout doing it! The MBA Finance Club is hosting its service event on Saturday, November 21 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. We will be helping the City of Raleigh with an invasive plant project at Fallon Park. Invasive plants are a serious issue. They replace native plants in their natural environment and can lower the quality of wildlife habitat if left unchecked.  We will meet as a group at the picnic shelter.

Important:  All volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes (such as work boots or tennis shoes) and long-sleeved shirts and pants. Also, each participant will need to complete a release form before beginning work on the 21st.

Meet a Jenkins MBA:  The Weekly Spotlight

Gibson 091514

NAME:   Theresa Gibson
TITLE:   Jenkins Professional MBA; Project Manager, Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State University
HOMETOWN:  Oakfield, NY
PREVIOUS DEGREES:  B.S. in Mathematics and B.S. in Math Education, Buffalo State University

Q:  Tell us something about you that we might be surprised to find out!
A:
I’m the youngest of 11 children!

Q:  What’s the most fun or enlightening experience you’ve had in the MBA program so far?
A:
I participated in last year’s MBA Leadership Coaching pilot program.  I had a personal coach whom I met with monthly, who helped me with my career strategy and gave me resources – he was a great sounding board!  Taking the time each month to reflect on my progress and goals was really important.

Q:  What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
A:
“There’s always more to learn!”  This advice came from my prior boss when I was a program manager, and it keeps me grounded. There’s always somebody more expert than you that you should be collaborating with.

Q:  What’s your favorite “comfort food,” and when do you like to make & enjoy it?
A:
Homemade bread. I like to make it when it’s cold out – it’s a comfort food because it reminds me of my mother, and the cold reminds me of my origins in Buffalo. It’s kind of a nostalgic thing.

Q:  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?  Did that wish play a role in shaping your career? – if so, how?
A:
I wanted to be a doctor.  I always knew I wanted a career that was saliently helping people.  I ultimately chose education over medicine because, ultimately, I think I have an impact on more people working at the Friday Institute.

Q:  What’s your dream job / career goal?  How is the MBA helping you get there?
A:  I’d actually like to evaluate the use of funds in education – perhaps working for a university, or in K-12 at the district or state level. The MBA meshes my skills as a project manager and as an educator really well. It takes my skill set and applies it to an area where there’s a real need in education.
