Name: Steve Markham
Role: Professor, Graduate Faculty
Education: Ph.D., Purdue University, 1992
Since coming to NC State in 1992, I have been instrumental in starting more than 20 high technology companies, served on the boards of directors for over a dozen companies and as chief financial officer for five.
I’ve also been involved with other companies in roles ranging from equity investor to managing director and vice president of marketing. About half of these companies are material successes.
My real passion in life is to understand and help students learn how new technologies find market success. It’s the most interesting and challenging thing I can think of – that’s why I’m a professor. I have found that my continued activity in startup companies – covering a wide range of technologies, from materials science to software to life sciences – provides rich, current examples for students about what companies and entrepreneurs must do to be successful and, just as importantly, how to actually do it.
