* Students serving on active duty in the military may substitute another MBA course in place of the Raleigh Residency, after first consulting with their academic advisor.
Students will complete a depth area and focus on a particular topic area. This requirement is required of all students entering the program starting in Fall 2016. Students should work with their advisor to see how to plan for those courses.
All online students starting in Fall 2016 and after are required to complete at least one practicum course for graduation. Practicum courses vary between 3 to 4 credit hours per course. These hands on courses are designed to provide you an experiential learning opportunity by working on real company projects. For a list of practicum courses please access the Course Descriptions link below – all practicum courses are notated with *P.
In addition to the core requirements, students are required to complete electives (the amount of hours depending on the credits hours of your practicum course). These electives may vary in topic area or focus on a special area of interest. The MBA program provides many 3 hour and 1 hour electives from which students can choose to fulfill those elective hours.
Creating Your Plan for Completion
Students can choose the best format and timeline for completing the online program based on their academic, professional, and personal needs. We encourage students to speak with an advisor to determine the best path toward completion based on their own circumstances.
When deciding on a track, students should expect to spend at least 4-5 hours per credit hour taken on watching lectures, reading, coursework, group projects, and studying in a week. Some classes may include synchronous sessions and team meetings that students need to factor into deciding what their capacity is to devote to their MBA classes.
The flexible track allows students the ability to create a plan that accommodates the many obligations they may have as a working professional student. This means that some semesters they may take 3 or 4 credit hours while other semester they may take more. Students must complete the program within 6 years and maintain the requirements for continuous enrollment as per the Graduate School’s policy. Flexible track students should consult with an advisor to make a plan to finish within those requirements.
The accelerated track is an intensive plan that allows online students to complete their program in 21 months. The accelerated path is targeted toward Professional Online MBA students who value time to degree completion above all other factors.
Students on the accelerated path are more limited when it comes to elective selection and they may not be able to focus their electives on a specific topic area. It is likely that you will have to complete an international course or a face-to-face course at the Main Raleigh Campus or the RTP Campus in order to complete graduation requirements in 21 months. Students should consult a Jenkins MBA academic advisor to confirm the most appropriate course plan.

Course Planning Tips
A few notes to help in course planning:
- All one hour elective courses will now be listed as MBA 590. This means that they will not be graded and will be factored into your G.P.A.
- Customized Format – Beginning with the Spring 2016 registration period, students enrolled in the Online MBA program will be able to participate in the MBA Customized Option, which allows for courses to be taken outside of your base campus/format. Each semester seats will be saved in some core classes for students who wish to take classes outside of their base program/format. Online students interested in taking face-to-face classes can now do so. However, available seats may be limited so interested students should sign up earlier in the registration process before the seats are filled.
- Professional Online MBA students will complete a mandatory Virtual Orientation and complete modules several weeks prior to the start of classes.
- Professional Online MBA students have one in person residency class that is required for Graduation. Students should plan to take the Raleigh Residency in their first semester in the program.
- Students should refer to the NC State University Calendar for important registration/drop/add/start dates.
