Teaching and Student Engagement

I thrive on bringing “aha moments” to students, helping them apply critical and ethical thinking skills to real-world scenarios. I developed and currently teach MBA 512: Ethical Thinking for Managers, which focuses on developing managers as ethical individuals beyond just legal compliance. We explore core ethical traits and paradigms, emphasizing personal responsibility and the impact of decisions on others. My goal is to prepare students to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, encouraging them to consider the world they want to create and the decisions needed to achieve it.

In addition to teaching ethical decision-making, I also developed and currently teach MBA 510: Critical Thinking for Managers, a required core course for all MBA students. The course is focused on helping students develop strong analytical, communication, and reflective thinking skills. Students learn to evaluate arguments, uncover assumptions, and assess issues using intellectual standards like clarity, depth, and logic. We also explore the role of language in communication, barriers to critical thinking, and human biases. Ultimately, the course equips students to think more deliberately, act with greater awareness, and approach complex problems from multiple perspectives.

Research and Industry Experience

My research delves into whistleblowing, ethics, and data security, with work appearing in The Journal of Business Ethics and Journal of Information Systems. As a CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner, I aim to bring practical insights to these areas. I co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Accounting Ethics, a unique compilation fostering critical thinking on ethical complexities in the accounting profession. My work also addresses the importance of data classification for security and explores the ethical dimensions of new technologies like generative AI. I focus on helping accountants fulfill their role as public servants and upholding trust in the profession.

Why Poole College?

Poole College has provided an incredibly supportive and open environment for my academic pursuits since I joined in 2006. Our ability to pursue diverse research topics and projects, like The Routledge Handbook of Accounting Ethics, has been invaluable. The college also supported the development of my Ethical Thinking for Managers course, which has since been integrated into the MBA core curriculum, demonstrating the college’s strong commitment to fostering ethical leadership.

Outside the Classroom

I serve as President of The Flower Shuttle, a nonprofit delivering donated fresh flowers to uplift individuals in our community—a truly joyous experience. To balance my analytical work, I engage in creative activities like providing the interior designs for homes my husband renovates for resale or rental. I also enjoy quilting, participating in a local book club and practicing yoga. My greatest accomplishment, however, is my family: my husband of nearly 40 years, our three NC State graduate children (two Poole alumni), and our three grandsons, all of whom live in Raleigh.
