Teaching and Student Engagement

My classes typically consist of group discussions driven by stories (both mine and those shared by students) that illustrate concepts and theories from organizational behavior, psychology, and sociology. Stories are valuable because many students learn best when they can connect theories, concepts, or issues presented in class to their own lives and careers. I teach critical thinking skills that help students apply these ideas across multiple contexts, including those beyond the classroom. I also aim to engage students who focus solely on “the bottom line” and may not yet recognize that organizations are responsible for managing the interests of multiple stakeholder groups.

Industry and Academic Contributions

My research addresses three main questions: (1) How does social influence from coworkers affect how employees think and behave at work? (2) How does an employee’s position in the organization’s social network affect their behavior and performance? (3) What can organizations do to help employees deal with stressors (such as abusive supervision, coworker exclusion, and broken promises) at work? I try to answer these questions by bringing together sociological (e.g., social networks) and psychological (e.g., personality) approaches to understand the workplace in a more comprehensive fashion. I’ve published my research extensively in management and applied psychology journals and have been part of teams that have been awarded more than $8 million in external funding from organizations like the National Science Foundation and the Australian Research Council. My work has been featured in media outlets such as Scientific American, BBC Science, Forbes, and Psychology Today.

Outside the Classroom

My wife and I love spending time with family. We have family locally, so a good deal of our free time is spent connecting with them. I also like to fish and golf.
