Raleigh Residency

Raleigh Residency provides a unique way for our professional online MBA students to network and develop their leadership skills.

Connect. Grow. Earn Course Credit.

As part of the Professional Online MBA program, students participate in two in-person residencies, known as Raleigh Residency. These residencies are an exciting opportunity to earn course credit while engaging in valuable experiences.

Typically, students complete the first residency (Raleigh Residency I) in their first semester and the second (Raleigh Residency II) before graduation.

These residencies offer more than just credit—they’re designed to help you sharpen key skills in communication, presentation, networking, decision-making and leadership.

*Active duty military may waive this requirement and substitute elective courses.

“What’s great about the residencies is that they give our professional [online] students not only the opportunity to take a class in three days but to meet other MBAs in the program. Students can take advantage of something that full-time MBAs have had for a long time – the ability to develop their network.”

Leigh Shamblin

Professor of Practice and Director of Leadership

How It Works

Each Residency is a crash course in leadership development, providing 80 to 100 Professional Online MBA students access to the same relationship-building and networking opportunities as their full-time classmates.

Raleigh Residency I (MBA 531)

Students attending Raleigh Residency I will:

  • Engage in exercises and activities to learn about leadership competencies including developing interpersonal relationships, understanding personality and self-awareness, improving communication, and motivating & encouraging others.
  • Explore the principles of teams and engage in team-building activities.
  • Experience decision-making scenarios in both individual and team settings.
  • Learn about conflict management styles, decision-making biases and how to empower others.
  • Apply new learnings to a team-based consulting project.

Raleigh Residency II (MBA 532)

In Raleigh Residency II, students will explore workplace dynamics, culture and organizational change via faculty-led discussions and the use of curated tools and diagnostics.

The Benefits

For busy professionals and online students, many of whom are also working while pursuing their MBA, the Raleigh Residency provides an opportunity to connect with other students while receiving course credit in a short, time-intensive format.

Students travel from other states and even other countries, to complete the residencies, creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.

By attending, students:

  • Build a strong network of peers, creating connections that can lead to future academic or professional opportunities. The residency also provides a chance to meet fellow students and faculty in person for the first time after interacting online.
  • Develop essential leadership skills—an integral part of the MBA program. Many professionals advance due to technical expertise but may face challenges in leadership roles. This experience helps students transition from individual contributors to effective influencers and leaders.
  • Expand their connections during the second session by exploring new topics, asking insightful questions, and diving deeper into areas they may not have considered before.

High Impact, High Return: the MBA Residency

Networking, leadership development and connection is the game plan for high-impact Jenkins MBA Residency learning experiences.
