Answers

General FAQs

May I send you my transcripts, test scores, or references before I submit my application?

You may upload your unofficial transcript as part of your online application. Unofficial transcripts must be uploaded before you submit the application. If admitted to the program, you will need to submit an official transcript directly to the NC State Graduate School.

We only accept online recommendation letters using the online application recommendation letter template. You will need your recommender’s name and email address to send them the recommendation form electronically. You may submit the application before recommendation letter(s) have been completed, however the Admissions Committee will not begin to review your application until at least two recommendations are complete.

You should list the NC State MBA program as a score recipient for the GMAT/GRE. If you have already taken the GMAT/GRE, you will need to order a score to be sent to the MBA program. The Admissions Committee cannot review your application without a GMAT/GRE score, unless you have been granted a GMAT/GRE waiver. You may submit the application before you have taken the GMAT/GRE (or retaken the GMAT/GRE), however the Admissions Committee will not begin to review your application until we have received test scores.

How long does the application process take?

Completed applications (including GMAT/GRE score, transcripts, recommendations, etc.) are reviewed as they are received. Applicants can expect to receive a decision within 6-8 weeks of submitting a complete application packet.

What is the difference between admission rounds and rolling admissions?

Our full-time program uses admission rounds and our professional programs use a rolling admissions schedule. Those who apply to the full-time program are reviewed together by round. For example, all who apply by the first deadline will be reviewed together in the first round. If your application is not complete (missing materials, etc.) by the first deadline, your application will be moved to the second round and so on. With a rolling admissions schedule, used for our professional programs, you may submit your application at any point as long as it is received by the final deadline. Once your application is received, along with all required materials, it will be reviewed. Our deadlines can be found here.

Do you offer graduate assistantships?

We offer graduate assistantships on several levels to eligible students in the full-time program. Graduate assistants are required to work up to 20 hours per week during the school year for the NC State MBA Program. Recipients are eligible for a full or partial tuition waiver, a monthly stipend, and health insurance. Students seeking Graduate Assistantships or scholarships may read more on our scholarships page.

How can I find out if you will accept my undergraduate transcript?

If you went to a university in the United States, you can refer to The Council for Higher Education Accreditation for a list of regional accrediting agencies. Your college or university must be regionally accredited in order for you to be admitted to NC State’s MBA program. If you went to school outside the United States and are unsure if we will accept your undergraduate transcripts, please feel free to contact our office.

Can I transfer to a different platform if I am a current Jenkins MBA student?

There is the potential opportunity for a current Jenkins MBA student to transition to another Jenkins MBA platform pending review and approval by the MBA office. Students should speak with their MBA advisor to learn more about the policy and process.

Can I begin the program in the spring?

Admission to the Professional MBA and Online MBA programs is granted for the fall and spring semesters. Admission to the Full-time program is granted for the fall term only.

How do I obtain the status of my North Carolina Residency request?

Is it possible to receive an application fee waiver or refund?

Application fee waivers are available to active duty military and veterans. To apply for the waiver, please select the Payment By Check option on the application and email the MBA office to request your waiver.

Waivers are not available to non-military applicants. Once your application fee has been received and processed you cannot receive a refund.

What additional expenses can I expect to incur while I am a student?

Estimated annual expenses for graduate students can be found here. Please note that tuition charges for MBA students are higher than that shown on the general University estimate. MBA tuition rates can be found here. In addition, many full-time students travel to national career fairs, which are not included in tuition. Students pay a one-time $100 fee to the MBA Student Association (MBASA). The fee will be used for professional and social student events and activities within the MBA student clubs.

Coursework and Prerequisites

May I take MBA classes as a non-degree student?

No. MBA classes are open only to students who are enrolled in graduate degree programs at NC State.

Will I be required to take any prep courses?

All students must complete a basic statistics course prior to beginning MBA coursework; however, you do not need to complete this course prior to submitting your application if you are starting in the fall semester. Students who are starting in the spring semester should have completed the statistics course at the time of application (Professional MBA applicants only).

Students may take the course at any accredited college or university. NC State classes that count towards this prerequisite are Statistics (ST) 311 & 350. You can determine if a class you took is equivalent here.

When should I choose my concentration?

Applicants are asked about their preferred concentration in the online application so that we can plan courses for future students. You can indicate your interest there on your application, but you may change your mind once you begin the program.

GMAT/GRE

If the applicant takes the GMAT/GRE test more than once, does the school average the scores or use the higher score?

We use the higher total score. In other words, we do not mix scores from different tests.

Can I substitute the GRE for the GMAT?

Yes, we will accept the GRE or the GMAT. There is not a preference between the two tests.

Will having extensive work experience or a graduate degree substitute for the GMAT?

Applicants with the US degree equivalent of a Ph.D., Pharm.D., JD, or MD are automatically waived from the GMAT/GRE. The Admissions Committee will consider waivers for other competitive applicants if they submit a waiver request prior to applying. I did not score as highly on the test as I thought I would and plan to retake it. Will the admissions committee wait to review my application until my new scores are available?

On the application, you may list a past/future test date as well as a future retake test date. If you take the GMAT/GRE and wish to retake it, you must contact the MBA Admissions Office as soon as possible and notify us of your plans. Otherwise, your application will be processed with the information you have submitted. You may take (or retake) the GMAT/GRE up until the application deadline date.

Interviews

Are interviews required?

Interviews are by invitation and are required for admission for all of our programs (Full-time, Evening and Online MBA programs).

What if I can’t attend an interview in-person?

If you are selected for an admission interview you will receive an invitation by email and may choose from the available dates and times listed. Your interview may be in-person, Skype, or Google Hangouts.

Admission Decisions

Will you notify me if something is missing from my application?

It is your responsibility to request GMAT/GRE scores, send in supporting documents, and submit your application. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and will make an effort to contact you if your application is incomplete. If you prefer immediate verification that your application pieces have been received, we suggest that you use either the tracking number or return receipt service provided by the shipper. Once you submit your application, after a few business days you may also log in to the application page and view the status of items that have been received by our office.

How will I receive an admission decision?

You’ll receive an official email informing you that a decision has been made and instructing you to log in in to your application to view the decision of admission or denial. (Please note: we will not give admission decisions over the telephone.)

Will I know the reason if I am denied admission?

The admission decision letter will not include the reasons for your denial, however you are welcome to contact the MBA Office to request feedback from a member of the admissions staff. Please note that feedback may not be provided during peak times.  The most common reasons for denial are:

  1. Undergraduate academic performance
  2. GMAT/GRE scores
  3. A poor fit between your career goals and the MBA program mission

Applicants placed on the waitlist will receive a final admission decision after the final application deadline.

International Applicants

Do I have to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

International applicants who did not complete their undergraduate work in the United States are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. Those who have completed one year or more of full-time study as a degree seeking student in a US four year institution are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Do you grant TOEFL/IELTS waivers?

Professional applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS if two out of three of the following criteria are met:

  1. Analytical writing assessment score of 4.5 or higher on the GMAT
  2. Satisfactory communication and teamwork skills, as assessed during the admissions interview
  3. Five years residency in the US, working in an establishment where all activities are conducted in English

Applicants who wish to apply for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver will need to email an admissions counselor. Full TOEFL/IELTS waiver information is found here.

Full-time applicants may not apply for TOEFL/IELTS waivers.

What is the minimum TOEFL/IELTS score requirement?

We require a minimum score of 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (internet-based test) for the TOEFL. A minimum score of 7.5 is required for the IELTS.

Will I be able to find employment in the United States upon graduation?

The current economic environment is challenging for many students seeking internships and permanent positions. For international students, the challenge is most difficult. U.S. companies have scaled back hiring and, in many instances, have laid off employees; if companies are able to hire, their preferences, most often, are for domestic U.S. candidates who do not require sponsorship. International students should expect that most employment opportunities open to them will be outside of the U.S.

Military Applicants

Is the Jenkins Graduate School of Management MBA Program part of GMAC’s Military-Friendly business schools list?

The Jenkins Graduate School of Management MBA Program has joined GMAC’s Military-Friendly business schools list and is committed to recruiting students with a military background. GMAC has also published a brochure with information for military personnel who are considering earning an MBA.

Application fee waivers are available to active duty military and veterans. To apply for the waiver, please select the Payment By Check option on the application and email the MBA office to request your waiver. Military applicants may also qualify for a GMAT/GRE waiver – please review our Test Waiver Information for more information.

Professional Online MBA

How does the quality of the online program compare to an on-site MBA program?

The Professional Online MBA program is the same quality program as the face-to-face programs taught by the award winning faculty at NC State Jenkins Graduate School of Management. When you complete your course of instruction, your degree will be granted by North Carolina State University.

Will the Professional Online MBA diploma differ from the face-to-face MBA diploma?

Your diploma will state that you have been granted a degree of Master of Business Administration. The diploma will not differentiate the mode in which the courses or degree were completed.

What are the admissions criteria?

The admissions criteria and procedures are the same as for the Professional Evening program.

Foreign nationals will not be granted F-1 and J-1 visa documentation (the I-20 and DS-2019 respectively) based on admission to a Distance Education (DE) or Online program. Additionally, it is a violation of status for an F-1 or J-1 student to change curriculum or major from a traditional course of study to a DE or On-line program after arrival to NC State University.

Sponsored F-1 and J-1 students may take courses in the online MBA program and at the remote RTP campus so long as the number of credit hours taken does not exceed 50% of the student’s total credit hours for the entire program and for any given semester.

Is work experience required to apply?

Yes, all applicants to the Professional Online MBA program must have at least two years of full time, post-baccalaureate professional employment.

Are there prerequisite classes?

Do you accept transfer credits?

Yes, the NC State MBA Program can accept up to 12 hours of transfer credit from another AACSB-accredited MBA program. The grade received for a transfer class must be a “B” or better, and the class must have been taken no more than six years prior to the applicant’s projected graduation date from the MBA Program at NC State’s College of Management. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher when they left their previous program in order for transfer credits to be accepted.

What will a typical course schedule for the Online MBA look like?

The Accelerated Professional Track will allow you to complete your Jenkins MBA in as little as 21 months. You can find more information about an Accelerated Course sequence here.

The Flexible Professional Track is designed to allow you to complete the degree when you want, how you want. A student completing the Flexible Professional track may alter their schedule any way they wish, as long as they complete the program within 6 years and maintain the requirements for continuous enrollment per the Graduate School policy.

The Raleigh Residency is optional for active duty military students.

Does the Professional Online MBA have concentrations?

Professional Online MBA students do not declare a concentration but do complete a Depth Requirement comprised of 6 credit hours of study in a particular business area. These mirror our concentration areas for Full-time MBA students. You may also choose to earn a certificate in a particular field of study

How will a typical Professional Online MBA class operate?

The NC State Jenkins Graduate School Online MBA Program is taught using asynchronous methods, with some synchronous methods. This means that you can complete the course requirements at a time and location convenient to you. The timing of completed course requirements is subject to deadlines provided by your professors. Teaching methods include podcasts linked with PowerPoint, tools such as Blackboard Collaborate, streaming video files, and discussion boards. Face-to-face instruction is used for the mandatory Raleigh Residencies and optional International Study courses.

Will I have access to faculty and staff?

Absolutely! Professional Online MBA students should not feel that they are studying in isolation. Access to faculty and staff is available and routinely scheduled in advance.

You can order your books from the University Bookstore online or via other online book venues.

What are the technical requirements for the program?

Access to high-speed internet service is required. Computers are platform independent – either a PC or MAC can be used (iPads will not run all of the software required for the program). Students are required to have access to a headset with microphone and a webcam. Additional information will be provided to enrolled students during the Virtual Orientation before classes begin.

How can I interact with other students?

Students in the Professional Online MBA program interact with each other through distance education technology (including Blackboard Collaborate and Moodle), e-mail, online discussion forums (message boards, instant messaging, etc.), telephone conferencing and the face-to-face Raleigh Residencies. Some courses require group projects. As the program proceeds, students pick specific interaction strategies that best meet their needs. Some opt to arrange their own in-person study groups.

What support services are available to a Professional Online MBA student?

Students in the Professional Online MBA program have the same academic support services as face-to-face part-time students.

Academic advising, career coaching and other tools to support both your career development and job search are available to you as part of your training.

Technical support will be available through the NCSU Help Desk and the Distance Education student help line.

Is there an orientation for Online MBA students?

The Jenkins Professional Online MBA requires a Virtual Orientation prior to the start of the program. In the Virtual Orientation, students explore, use, and master the technology they will work with in their courses during the program. Students also meet their classmates and begin engaging in online meetings, discussions, and simple group assignments. Orientation also provides discussion and information on the first residency, academic policies, expectations of the program, and logistical student support.

Applicants also should expect a moderate increase (mandated by the legislature or university) in tuition and fees for each academic year. If you are not a North Carolina resident, but are a US citizen, your tuition and fees will most likely decrease your second year if you qualify for in-state residency.

Professional Evening MBA at RTP

Can I apply to both campuses (RTP and Main Campus) for the Professional MBA program?

No, you must select one program (either the Main Campus or the RTP MBA). If you have already applied to one program and would like to switch, please contact the MBA Program office at 919.515-5584 or mba@ncsu.edu.

What is the difference between the on-campus and RTP professional programs?

The admissions requirements, credit hours, length of program, faculty, and quality of the student body are the same for both Main Campus and RTP programs. There is a difference with the number of elective offerings at the RTP site and the tuition rate.

Are all depth areas of emphasis offered at the RTP location?

While all required courses are offered at the RTP location, electives are not all offered at both locations, depending on demand and meaningful class size. To complete a depth area, you may need to complete some elective courses on the NC State University Main Campus (using main campus tuition rates for those courses).
